No-decision classification: an alternative to testing

چکیده

11 This paper proposes a new statistical technique for deciding which of two theories is better supported 12 by a given set of data while allowing for the possibility of drawing no conclusion at all. Procedurally 13 similar to the classical hypothesis test, the proposed technique features three, as opposed to two, 14 mutually exclusive data classifications: reject the null, reject the alternative, and no decision. Referred 15 to as No-decision classification (NDC), this technique requires users to supply a simple null and 16 a simple alternative hypothesis based on judgments concerning the smallest difference that can be 17 regarded as an economically substantive departure from the null. In contrast to the classical hypothesis 18 test, NDC allows users to control both Type I and Type II errors by specifying desired probabilities 19 for each. Thus, NDC integrates judgments about the economic significance of estimated magnitudes 20 and the shape of the loss function into a familiar procedural form. 21 © 2004 Published by Elsevier Inc. 22 JEL classification: C12; C44; B40; A14 23

Measuring Hospital Performance Using Mortality Rates: An Alternative to the RAMR

Background The risk-adjusted mortality rate (RAMR) is used widely by healthcare agencies to evaluate hospital performance. The RAMR is insensitive to case volume and requires a confidence interval for proper interpretation, which results in a hypothesis testing framework. Unfamiliarity with hypothesis testing can lead to erroneous interpretations by the public and other stakeholders. We argue t...

A New Method for Root Detection in Minirhizotron Images: Hypothesis Testing Based on Entropy-Based Geometric Level Set Decision

In this paper a new method is introduced for root detection in minirhizotron images for root investigation. In this method firstly a hypothesis testing framework is defined to separate roots from background and noise. Then the correct roots are extracted by using an entropy-based geometric level set decision function. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated on real captured images in tw...

Fuzzy decision making in testing hypotheses: An introduction to the packages ``FPV" and ``Fuzzy.p.value" with practical examples

This paper reviews and compares two R packages ``FPV" and ``Fuzzy.p.value".These packages are designed for testing hypotheses in a fuzzy environment using a fuzzy $p$-value based approach. In fact, the packages ``FPV" and ``Fuzzy.p.value" propose some useful functions for testing hypotheses when the data / hypotheses are fuzzy rather than crisp. The proposed methods and function...

An Algorithm for Resource Allocation through the Classification of DMUs

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric method for assessing relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). Every single decision-maker with the use of inputs produces outputs. These decision-making units will be defined by the production possibility set. Resource allocation to DMUs is one of the concerns of managers since managers can employ the results of this process to a...
